Historical Background

Middlesbrough Football Club is a professional football club that plays in the EFL (English Football LeagueChampionship, England's second-highest tier of professional football! This club is almost ancient since it was founded 143 years ago in 1876 in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire!

It didn't take them long to start playing with the big boys, since a bit over a decade later, that is in 1889, the team went professional! Since then, the team has only spent 2 seasons outside of the top 2 divisions, proving themselves worthy of their rank!

Crest and Colours

The club's first kit consisted of white shirtsblue shorts with blue socks. Then, in 1899, they decided on their colours for good: red and white! Although they decided on their colours pretty quickly, their crest is a different matter: the first crest was the town's coat-of-arms, but with a red lion instead of a blue one to match the kit.

Then, in 1973, they used only the red lion with the club's initials beneath it. This was updated in 1986 to a circular crest with the lion in the middle, encircled by the words 'Middlesbrough Football Club 1986'. Finally, in 2007, the crest was changed to a shield with the lion inside and the words 'Middlesbrough Football Club 1876' around it.

Stadium

It took this team a while to find a home to play in! The club first played at Albert Park, but were kicked out after not respecting the property. Then they rented Breckon Hill until 1880, when the rent proved too high for the still-amateur club.

Then, in 1882, they moved to Linthorpe Road Ground; however, as the team grew, the club was forced to moved to a new ground, and in 1903 moved to Ayresome Park. This stadium was their home for 102 years, that is, until 1995 when the club moved to Riverside Stadium, their current home.

Key Players

So many players to mention, but here are the ones that definitely deserve your attention: firstly, there's Darren Randolph who earned the Player of the Year award in 2019! Then we'd have to mention George Friend who won Player of the Year twice in 2014 and 2015! Last, but not least, there's Ryan Shotton, who has earned a rating of 7.09, the highest of the team!

Records and Noteworthy Stats

This team have definitely proven themselves worthy of their professional status by winning the Football League First Division once, the Football League Second Division 3 times, and the EFL Cup once! They were also runners-up in the 2006 UEFA Europa League!
