Historical Background
Football is undoubtedly one of the most exciting sports on TV today, and certain teams only make it better! Which is why we'd like to introduce you to FC Porto! We think this team is great, but don't just take our word for it! Here's what you should know about Porto!
Futebol Clube do Porto ('Porto Football Club') is best known for training one of Portugal's most prominent football teams. In fact, it's known as one of the Os Três Grandes ('The Big Three') alongside its rivals Benfica and Sporting CP.
Moreover, FC Porto has been around for over a 100 years! The club was founded in 1893 by António Nicolau de Almeida, a wine merchant who fell in love with football when he visited England. However, no sooner than its formation, the club's performance declined.
But, in 1906 it was revived by José Monteiro da Costa the club's first president. Nowadays, Porto plays in the Primeira Liga, Portugal's topmost professional football league, making Porto excellent to watch on TV!
Kit, Crest and Colours
The first crest was created in 1910, and it was a simplified version of the current crest, without the coat-of-arms and the crown. These were then added in October 26th, 1922, meaning FC Porto's crest hasn't changed at all since then!
The kit's colours were decided upon in 1909 by Monteiro da Costa. da Costa decided upon shirts with white and blue stripes to reflect Portugal's national flag (which was blue and white at the time), so that the team would represent Portugal as a whole.
Grounds
Porto have seen many ground changes since their beginning; they started out playing in the Campo da Rainha ('Queen's Field') until 1912. In 1913, they moved to the larger Campo da Constituição ('Constitution Field'). However, even this ground proved too small.
So, in 1952, the team moved to the Estádio das Antas ('Antas Stadium'). When Porto were granted the rights to host the 2004 UEFA Euro in 1999, they saw this as an opportunity for a new stadium; so they commissioned the Estádio do Dragão (Dragon Stadium) to be built, which is now their current home since 2004.
Key Players
Such a great team must obviously be made up of equally great players! And, in fact, the current lineup is chock full of fantastic players! Firstly, there's Yacine Brahimi, who, thus far, has scored 50 goals in his 5 years of playing with Porto!
Secondly, there's Jesús Manuel Corona, who is a definite asset in this year's Champions League, scoring 3 goals! And, last, but not least, there's Moussa Marega who scored 6 goals in the Champions League this year! These are definitely excellent players, making Porto on live stream more exciting!
Honours
Porto is one of those teams that rack up an impressive track record! Their astounding list of achievements include winning the Primeira Liga 28 times, the Champions League twice, the Europa League twice, and winning 4 trophies in a single season twice!
